B.Sc Perfusion Technology
We are very familiar with the word Bypass Surgery. The organ which is associated with the surgery is our heart. Now this isn’t much clarity on what Bypass means other than the common thought that it is an open heart surgery which it very complicated and it takes hours to get done with. But what Bypass actually means is that that the heart will be functioning outside the body with the use of a heart lung machine which helps in circulating the blood and oxygen flow in and out of the heart.
Now when the term Bypass is being familiarized, there is another word which isn’t much common among people & that is Perfusionist. A perfusionist is the skilled professional who operates the Bypass machine while surgeries of the heart are performed.
A perfusionist will be sitting behind the operating table operating the Bypass machine and controls the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in blood during the surgery.
Now when the role of a perfusionist seems interesting to many, students will be wondering on how to become one. The answer is enrolling for a bachelor degree in B. Sc Perfusion Technology.
B. Sc Perfusion Technology: Duration
Bachelor of Science in Perfusion Technology is a regular 3 year course. In the course a student learns the theoretical and practical knowledge of how perfusion of a human body is done with the help of heart lung machine.
Eligibility for B. Sc Perfusion Technology
A student who wishes to pursue B. Sc Perfusion Technology must be having a minimum of 50% average marks in the 12th grade in the 1st group of Science which includes Physics, Chemistry and Biology from schools which have proper affiliation and recognized boards.
Besides this basic eligibility, a student should also have specific characteristics as main criteria to study this course. They are
- Strong observational skill
- A quick learner
- Willingness to work under immense stress
- A good team player
- Detailed oriented
The course of 3 years is divided into 6 semesters. The syllabus taught in each year is as below:
Semesters 1 & 2
- Human Anatomy
- Pathology – (Clinical Pathology, Hematology & Blood – Banking)
Semesters 3 & 4
- Medicine relevant to perfusion technology
- Applied Pathology
- Applied Microbiology
- Applied Pharmacology
- Introduction to Perfusion Technology
Semesters 5 & 6
- Clinical Perfusion Technology
- Applied Perfusion Technology
- Advanced Perfusion Technology
Scope of B. Sc Perfusion Technology
Perfusionist is a very crucial member of the surgical team of cardio related surgeries. Without a Perfusionist a cardiac surgery cannot be performed. So the demand for such a skilled professional is normally high. Perfusionists can also find broader prospects of career in foreign countries as well. Perfusionists are less in number while comparing with the cardiac surgeries happening in the hospitals across the country. So it is easier to find a job after the completion of the course.
